AEO vs SEO: what's the difference?

The short version: SEO optimizes to rank a link on a results page; AEO optimizes to be named and cited inside the AI's answer. They overlap on technical foundations, but the goal — and several of the levers — are different. AEO doesn't replace SEO; it extends it for a world where the answer often arrives before the click.

What they share

AI answer engines retrieve from live search indexes, so the technical SEO basics still gate everything: crawlability, indexability, HTTPS, mobile/viewport, valid schema, fast Core Web Vitals. If Google can't index you, AI Overviews won't cite you. More on how AEO works →

Where they diverge

  • Answer-first structure — AEO rewards a crisp, quotable answer at the top of the page; classic SEO tolerated long intros.
  • Evidence density — sourced statistics and citations are the strongest signal for being cited, beyond ranking.
  • Entity clarity — engines need to verify who you are (Organization schema, sameAs, Wikidata) to recommend you by name.
  • Community & review authority — much of what AI recommends is shaped on Reddit and review sites, not your domain.

Should you do both?

Yes. Keep your SEO foundations; layer AEO on top to win the answer. AEOX focuses purely on the AEO layer — measuring your visibility across engines, fixing the citability levers on your live site, and proving the lift — without turning into a keyword-ranking tool. AEO glossary →
